First Impressions: CLANNAD

Our first "first impression" of the new season just so happens to be one of the most anticipated shows of this season both in Japan and in the romance corner of anime. Clannad is Key and Kyoto Animation (The animation company behind Haruhi, and Lucky ☆ Star) newest production, and already it's living up to its predecessors AIR and Kanon.

Tomoya Okazaki is viewed as a delinquent by his classmates due to always being late for classes, but really, he's a nice guy. He's good friends with Sunohara who like Tomoya is always late for class. For an intro on the rest of the characters, let's advance!

Nagisa is shy, partially due to her having a weak body, to the point she missed so much school she was held back a year. She may be the main Female protagonist in this story, but it's still to early to tell. She was interested in joining the drama club but, it was disbanded last march when the members stopped going. Tomoya and Nagisa are now trying to rebuild the drama club.

We are also introduced to a number of side characters. The Fujibayashi twins for starters. Ryou and Kyou Fujubayashi are, from what we can see, polar opposites, Ryou is timid and Tomoya's class rep, where as Kyou, is VERY aggressive, and protects her sister. Next we have Toyomo, who is a ridiculously strong girl; she beats the crap out of 3 bikers in 3 seconds in the episode. We also meet Nagisa's family -- Who are totally insane -- and are possibly introduced to this show's trademark word "Guu~". Also we meet Tomoya's father, whose been drowning himself in booze and gambling ever since his wife died in a car accident.

Overall, I liked Clannad. Now, I'm not a fan of the whole tennis-ball sized eyeballs thing going here, but overlooking that, the show is pretty solid. What do you expect from Visual Key. The show does intrigue me. Some sort of sci-fi or fantasy events are amiss and I'm really curious to find out what they are. Tomoyo Sakagami was awesome. Nagisa's parents -- particularly her dad -- were hilarious. And, oh yeah, the main character still manages to be emo despite him coming off as the mischievous type. He has every reason to be like that though.
