CRI Movie Playback Engine for the Wii
Famitsu has some interesting news. "Cinemastudio" is either being developed for the Nintendo Wii, or is already available. From what the rough translation states, it seems Cinemastudio is some sort of optimization engine that allows playback for high quality video and sound even in compressed state. The article also states that it makes the whole process of compiling full motion video much more simple for the Wii, and even sports a "multilingual function" for localization.
In other words, creating FMV for the Wii seems to have been a hassle for developers. This tool makes it much easier and it boasts new features for FMV that was not previously available. Don't hold it against me if my explanation isn't 100% correct, though.
What does this mean for you? Perhaps faster development cycles. I'm sure game studios can cut production time on FMV's by using this tool, which means the sooner the game can be finished and out on the market.
Call me crazy, but this seems like a perfect platform for anime on the Wii. You have high quality video and sound, with multi-lingual support. Yet, the article never did say anything about a subtitle feature. I say this because I wonder if the fledging Wii homebrew community could or would take advantage of the Wii capabilities by using this tool. The article didn't state any information on how widely available this tool would be.
