Western developers dropping the ball on DS?

Pocket Gamer has a very interesting article up on how Western developers have failed to score with the Nintendo DS, showing via means of several Metacritic graphs that, while Western developers seem to be making a ton of DS games, a lot of them suck in comparison to the ones being developed by Japanese studios. According to the info sourced from Metacritic's game numbers and review averages, only 33% of DS games (Not counting first-party titles) are Japanese. However...
This is where things get really interesting – when you realise that the highest-scoring non-Japanese DS game is Tony Hawk's American Sk8land, in 16th position with (a very respectable) 84 per cent. We then have another Activision title, Ultimate Spiderman, in 34th place, and then another Tony Hawk's title, Downhill Jam, in 40th.
On the whole, the bulk of the top 100 places – 74 of them – are from Japan, while the country is responsible for just 32 of the bottom 101 places.
The article goes on to mention that the most mediocre games developed in the West are those based on existing licenses, movies, TV shows and the like. This seems to be the reason Japan is so far ahead in the game, given their tendency to innovate, rather than just drop Spongebob into a game and sell it to the unsuspecting kiddies.

Be interested to see these games compared to actual sales figures though. Which will probably show that most of the Japanese titles pale compared to western Churnville Incs licenses and sports games.
I do have to say that this isn't too surprising though. Short of the big name devs, who pump out one game every few years, most of the originality seems to have been squeezed out or sucked up into the likes of EA.
A profitable and easy self publishing method would probably light up western originality again. Live and Playstation dingdong (whatever its called) are good starts but when will they catch onto that homebrew resource? Sony?
Well, as far as the DS is concerned, I do think we can expect a change over the next year or so. Keep in mind that "innovation" on the GBA was pretty high, but even the top-ranking GBA games were dominated by Japanese developers and the usual Tony Hawk crap.
Keep in mind that the GBA was the platform of choice for portable role-playing, but that status couldn't have been easy to gain. The plethora of Zelda and Pokemon games (especially the latter) on the system for all those generations probably had a lot to do in the way of inspiring other developers to develop full-fledged RPGs for it.
Cut to a few years later. Nintendo released the DS, which was essentially a double-edged sword. Even if the system, did pick up in sales, they had the PSP's initial "Gameboy killer" reputation to compete with, in addition to the fact that no one really knew what to do with a touchpad and two screens.
My point is, innovation and epic games on the DS will pick up, just like they did on the GBA. The DS is extremely different from anything else out there and so far, developers have just been experimenting with it and getting to know the hardware.
Games like that top-secret BioWare title and Spore and Final Fantasy III are the examples I'm going to point out as evidence of this fact. For every analyst that says the PSP is going to outdo the DS this year or the next, there are probably five DS projects underway to prove them wrong.
