Going from Doujin to mainstream

So, as you all know, I've been obsessed with TYPE-MOON's Tsukihime for the past week. As I pointed out earlier, TYPE-MOON is a doujin-soft (which is Japan's version of "indie") game developer. Well, at least they were.

In recent times, with the success of both Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night, TYPE-MOON has grown from indie to major PC developer. Not only have Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night been given the anime treatment, their respective transitions from game to anime have been nothing short of stunning. Both series are extremely well-drawn and scripted, and they're giving the competition a run for their money.

Manga Jouhou recently translated a very interesting article about TYPE-MOON's roots as a doujin-soft developer and how they shaped the doujin community and brought about a revolution that enabled them to go from small-time developer to full-time mainstream PC game studio. The article also talks of the recent developments in the doujin channels of distribution and how they could very well replace current methods of distribution. Here's your usual juicy excerpt:
Of course, these doujin channels are supported by doujinshi, which aren't sold in normal bookstores, but still have a huge market behind them. Last year in Akihabara, an 8-storey building specializing in doujin manga was built on the vacant lot in Denkigai Chuuou Douri, where Sato-Musen used to be. The "Comic Market (comike)" has achieved a great establishment in this type of marketing. It exists as a common center for Manga, Anime, game fans and it is the largest festival in Otaku culture. Currently, the festival is held during August and December, and in just 3 days, approximately 400,000 to 500,0000 people participate. As one of the events taking place in Tokyo Big Site, this event attracts the most customers.

Highly recommended reading for anyone into the Japanese doujin game/manga culture. Very highly recommended if you're an otaku of any sort!

That one's from Fate/Stay Night. Alas, there's no translation out for it yet. The good news is, Mirror-Moon (the same group that translated Tsukihime) is also in the process of translating Fate/Stay.

They're also doing Kara no Kyokai, TYPE-MOON's very first project before the company was officially formed!
