More hate for the PS3

There comes a point in the gaming industry every now and then where people pick up on one little topic -- a minor screw-up, or perhaps a silly quote ... or an entire console -- and proceed to bash the living hell out of it over and over again, until the term "flogging a dead horse" no longer does the act any justice.

This year's unlucky candidate for industry punching bag happens to be the PS3. As if being slammed by John Carmack wasn't enough, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell decided to hop aboard the Sony hate train in a recent interview with Game Informer:

"Gameinformer:What about the PS3?

Gabe Newell: The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted. I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a "do over". Just say, "This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it". The happy story is the Wii. I'm betting that by Christmas of next year, the Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I'm crazy. I really like everthing that Nintendo is doing. "

Being a bit extreme there, aren't you Gabe? I really like everything Nintendo is doing, too (except Friend codes), but God damn it, the PS3 will not suck. Does it really take more than a little common sense to see that the 360 isn't as powerful as the PS3 and we will more than likely start seeing solid evidence of this a year down the line? So it costs $600 ... OK, admittedly that was a bad move. But people will still buy it (they still buy overpriced iPods). Granted, developing for the system is hard. Developers will figure it out. And yes, it's an excuse to push Blu-ray. So, SCE has their crazy new format and they want to flaunt it. The games will not cost more.

Sony might have gone a little overboard with the console, but that does not mean it's going to suck outright. No one wants it now, but wait till the Final Fantasies start rolling ... I doubt we'll hear any complaining then. I'm already rather attracted to the PS3 thanks to FFXIII, Assassin's Creed (yes, I'd rather play it on the PS3) and White Knight Story. Face it people ... the Wii and 360 are both awesome, but there are some things that developers can do with the PS3 which they can't with the other two.
