Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer making Wiimote breakthroughs?
As if the Ghost Rider game wasn't bad enough (not providing a specific link ... any review on any site will do), Marvel fans now have Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer to look forward to. The game, based on the sequel to the first FF movie (which really wasn't too bad if you managed to ignore Dr. Doom's horrendous portrayal by Julian McMahon) is being developed by 2K Games, and IGN Wii Australia (don't ask) recently got to take a look at it at NYCC.
Apparently, the game employs the same gameplay style as the X-Men Legends games and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, while placing a stronger emphasis on combos. That's not what caught my eye, though. This game will suck. Take my word for it.
No, what caught my eye was that IGN got to check out the Wii version of the game and some of what they had to say about it is fairly interesting:
The Wii, of course, capitalizes on the control functions of the remote and nunchuk for a unique and somewhat strenuous (exercise is good!) experience. The controller is used to enhance special attacks throughout the game. For instance, The Thing has an overhead smash move that shakes the ground on impact. To perform this move using the Wii controller, the user pulls down the remote and nunchuk in a fist-smashing motion, causing the big guy to thump the ground. The harder the double-punch, the more damage happens onscreen. The wii-mote can also be used to select different teammates in the midst of a fight.
See the part in bold? That's what interests me. Kind of shameful that Rise of the Silver Surfer is going to be one of the first games to employ a 1:1 control scheme that actually takes force into account on the Wii, but I suppose someone had to start the trend.
Again, I highly doubt this game will be any good and the only reason I'm even bothering to mention it is because of that one little bit about the controls. The movie, however, might not be so bad. I'm actually kind of looking forward to it. They say Dr. Doom is going to look and act a lot more like his comic counterpart this time around. And hey, the Surfer and Galactus are in the flick. I doubt they could screw it up worse than Mephisto and Blackheart in the Ghost Rider movie.

I thought this was always another dumb dumb a anti-Wii mantra that 1:1 wasn't possible ergo Wii sucks etc etc.
Now sure you can't place the controller in 3D space and accurately track its position.
However I thought the PC driver hacks showed you can monitor direction and velocity extremely accurately. This is all you need to apply movement and force to in game object.
This really brings me back to the gesture + velocity = Wii Street Fighter fireballs of lust theory.
I so much hope that despite the promised Classic controller support they also implement a superior Wiimote system that blows it out of the water and far off into space.
Nice find BTW! I think I passed over that Vid and story on every other site. :)
Heh, thanks! ;)
I don't know much about these games but I loved Julian's portrayal of Dr. D. The sequel looks awesome too!
